I just signed up for my first policy last month and, honestly, the whole process felt like I was picking lottery numbers. I parked in a garage at my old place and my quote was like $150 less than when I told them I’d be on the street now. Tried reporting lower mileage too, since I barely drive, but that didn’t really budge anything unless I agreed to use their little tracking app (which I’m not super into). Maybe it’s all just smoke and mirrors... or maybe my car just looks extra “stealable” to the insurance robots?

Honestly, I’ve wondered the same thing. Street parking seems to trigger some kind of algorithmic panic. I commute every day and my rates shot up when I moved my car out of a garage. The tracking app thing feels invasive—like, I get wanting lower rates, but I’m not giving them a play-by-play of my drive to Wawa. Insurance math is a black box, and apparently my ten-year-old sedan is a hot commodity now? Go figure.

I get the frustration, but I’m not convinced it’s just about street parking or the “robots” thinking your car is a prime target. Insurance companies have always looked for any excuse to bump up rates.

I mean, have you seen what some of these older cars are going for at auctions lately? Even basic models are getting stolen for parts. It’s wild.

I’ve kept my ‘87 Cutlass in a locked garage since forever, and my rates are still creeping up every year—doesn’t matter if I drive it 500 miles or 5,000. The tracking apps bug me too, but honestly, I’d rather deal with that than get dinged for “potential risk” just because I don’t have a driveway. Feels like you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Ever try talking directly to an agent instead of using the online quote tools? Sometimes they’ll actually explain the weird surcharges, but half the time it’s just “company policy.” Makes you wonder if any of it’s really about your car at all.

Honestly, I’ve seen people with spotless records and cars locked up tight still get hit with random surcharges. The “company policy” line drives me nuts too. Ever notice how the rates go up even when nothing’s changed? Makes you wonder if it’s just Delaware or everywhere.

It’s wild how often I hear this, and honestly, I get where you’re coming from. The “company policy” excuse is like the magic phrase they use when they don’t want to dig into the real reason. I’ve seen rate hikes happen for folks who haven’t had a ticket or claim in years—sometimes it’s just because the company’s costs went up, or they’re adjusting for stuff like more accidents in your zip code. Doesn’t make it any less frustrating though.

I’m curious—has anyone actually tried switching companies after one of those random increases? Did it make a difference, or did you just end up with the same nonsense somewhere else? I’ve heard mixed things, but maybe Delaware’s just got its own weird insurance quirks...
