knowing my luck, the minute I pick a high deductible, I’ll trip over my own shoelaces and need it.

That’s exactly why I can’t bring myself to go with a high deductible. I drive a car that costs more to fix than some people’s houses, and even though I’m careful, all it takes is one distracted driver in a parking lot. Sure, the premiums sting every month, but I’d rather pay a bit more now than get hit with a massive bill later. Has anyone actually saved money long-term by going high deductible, or does it just look good on paper?

Honestly, I’ve seen both sides play out. Had a client who swore by high deductibles—saved a bunch for years, then got rear-ended and the repair bill wiped out all those savings in one go. On the flip side, some folks never file a claim and pocket the difference for a decade. It really does come down to your risk tolerance and luck. Personally, I lean toward lower deductibles for peace of mind, even if it means paying a bit more each month.

I hear you on the peace of mind thing—there’s something comforting about knowing you won’t get hit with a huge bill if something goes wrong. I used to go for higher deductibles to save a bit each month, but after a minor fender bender last winter, I realized the stress just wasn’t worth it for me. Even though I probably paid more over the years, not having to scramble for cash after an accident felt like the right call. Guess it really is about what helps you sleep at night.

Honestly, I get the peace of mind argument, but I just can’t bring myself to pay those higher premiums every month. I’ve been driving for over twenty years, and in that time, I’ve only had one accident—and even then, my deductible was high, but it still worked out cheaper than all those extra payments would’ve been. I’d rather take the risk and keep the cash in my pocket unless something major happens.

Maybe it’s just my luck, or maybe I’m a little too confident behind the wheel, but shelling out more for “just in case” feels like handing money away for nothing most years. I’d rather have a little stress now and then than bleed money every month. If I ever have a big accident, sure, I’ll be annoyed, but at least I’ll know I took my chances. Guess it depends on your tolerance for risk... for me, I’d rather gamble a bit than overpay forever.

Couldn’t agree more—paying those higher premiums feels like tossing cash into a black hole most years. I’d rather roll the dice and keep my road trip snack fund healthy. Honestly, I’ve had my share of close calls (thanks, random deer), but nothing that made me regret sticking with a higher deductible. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather risk a little stress than pay for “what ifs” that never happen. If disaster ever strikes, at least I’ll have some epic stories... and maybe a slightly lighter wallet.
