Making Sure Your Insurance Claim Has All The Right Paperwork

I hear you on the cloud apps - super handy, but I’ve had a couple times where I couldn’t remember which app I used or the photo was too blurry to read. Guess it’s better than the crumpled mess in my glove box, though. What’s worked for me is just snapping pics and emailing them to myself with a subject line like “car stuff.” Not perfect, but at least I can search my inbox later. Paper receipts just don’t survive my commute... especially after a spilled coffee or two.

You’re not alone - those paper receipts are basically allergic to coffee (and apparently, my dog’s teeth). I can’t tell you how many times someone’s handed me a photo that looks like it was taken during an earthquake, or sent a screenshot from the wrong app. I get it, though - cloud apps are supposed to make things easier, but if you can’t remember which one you used, it’s like a digital scavenger hunt.

Emailing yourself is actually underrated. At least you can search for “car stuff” instead of scrolling through 400 random photos of your lunch. Still, if you ever need to file a claim, clearer pics really do help - sometimes we get receipts that look like abstract art. If you can, try to snap the pic somewhere with good lighting and double-check it’s legible before you hit send. Trust me, your future self (and your insurance adjuster) will thank you.

Honestly, I get the whole “take a clear photo” thing, but sometimes that’s just not practical when you’re juggling bags and dodging puddles. I’ve actually started just keeping a cheap ziplock bag in my backpack for receipts - sounds silly, but it works. Also, instead of emailing myself every time, I use the Notes app and just snap the pic right there. It’s searchable and doesn’t get lost in my inbox. Not perfect, but at least it keeps things together when life gets chaotic...

I hear you on the chaos - last time I tried snapping a photo of a receipt in the rain, my phone nearly took a swim. I’ve just started tossing all my paperwork in the glove box, but then it turns into a black hole and I can never find anything when I need it. Ever had an adjuster give you grief over a faded or crumpled receipt? Wondering if anyone’s actually had a claim denied just because the paperwork was a mess...

Been there. My glove box is basically a time capsule of every oil change and burger joint receipt since 2012. Here’s what’s worked for me, after getting burned by an adjuster who couldn’t read a sun-faded slip:

Step 1: As soon as you get a receipt, snap a pic - inside the car, not outside in the rain. If it’s pouring, just wait. Trust me, soggy receipts are useless.

Step 2: Email that photo to yourself with a subject line like “Insurance - [date]” so you can actually find it later. Don’t rely on your phone gallery unless you like scrolling past 400 dog photos.

Step 3: Toss the paper copy in a cheap envelope or zip bag in the glove box. Not perfect, but at least they’re all together.

I’ve never had a claim flat-out denied for messy paperwork, but I did have to jump through hoops once because my receipts looked like they’d survived a flood. Adjusters aren’t always sympathetic if they can’t read the numbers. Just makes life easier to keep things semi-organized... or at least legible.
