I’ve seen folks get hassled over aftermarket seat covers, too.

Yeah, that’s wild. I always thought seat covers were harmless. Do you guys declare every little mod, or just the big stuff? I’m trying to figure out what’s actually worth reporting without driving my premium up for no reason.

You’d be surprised what some companies want you to declare. Here’s the deal: anything that changes the value or safety of the car—think wheels, suspension, engine mods, even high-end audio—should be reported. Stuff like seat covers or air fresheners? Usually not worth mentioning unless they’re some crazy custom job. If it’s just cosmetic and doesn’t affect performance or value, most insurers don’t care. But if you’re unsure, check your policy wording... some are pickier than others.

Yeah, I’ve run into this too—my insurer wanted to know about a roof rack I put on, which I thought was a bit much. I’d rather over-declare than risk a claim getting denied, though. Policies can be weirdly specific sometimes... better safe than sorry.

I get wanting to play it safe, but honestly, I’ve found over-declaring can sometimes backfire. A buddy of mine listed every little mod and ended up with a premium hike that didn’t really match the risk. I usually just check the policy wording line by line—if it doesn’t specifically mention something like a roof rack, I don’t bother unless it’s a permanent change. Insurance companies can be picky, but they’re also looking for reasons to bump up your rate... just my two cents.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’d rather be a bit too cautious than risk having a claim denied down the line. Heard too many horror stories about people getting burned for not declaring stuff, even minor mods. Insurance companies can be sticklers if it suits them...
