I get where you’re coming from—those miles sneak up on you, especially if you’re trying to stick to a budget. I’ve heard some companies will let you bump up the cap mid-policy, but they usually want more money for it. Honestly, I’d rather just plan ahead and save the hassle. Do you think the extra cost is worth it, or does it defeat the point of having a classic car policy in the first place?

I ran into this exact thing last year—thought I’d never hit the 2,500 mile cap, then a couple of road trips later, I was scrambling. Upping the mileage cost me a bit more, but honestly, it still worked out cheaper than a regular policy. I guess it depends how often you want to actually drive your classic. Do you find yourself tempted to use yours more than just for shows or weekends? That’s where I struggle... it’s hard not to take it out when the weather’s perfect.

I hear you on the temptation—mine’s supposed to be “occasional use,” but when the sun’s out, it’s tough not to just go for a spin. I always worry about getting dinged if I fudge the mileage, though. Have you ever had an insurer actually check your odometer, or is it more of an honor system?

Honestly, that’s my biggest fear too. I had a buddy who got his policy canceled after a fender bender because the shop reported his mileage to the insurance company—apparently they do check sometimes, especially if there’s a claim involved. Most of the time it does seem like an honor system, but I’m not willing to risk it. My record’s already got a couple dings, so I try to play it safe.

Do you guys log your miles somewhere just in case? I keep a notebook in the glovebox and jot down every trip over 10 miles... probably overkill, but it helps me sleep at night. Wondering if anyone’s ever had their rates jump just for going a bit over, or is it only if something happens?

Personally, I just snap a pic of my odometer every few months—if they ever ask, at least I’ve got something. Never had anyone actually check unless there was an accident, and even then, they seemed more interested in the damage than my miles. Maybe it depends on the company? I dunno, feels like as long as you’re not doubling your limit, they probably don’t care.
