Have you ever actually heard of someone getting denied over, say, 200 extra miles? Or is it mostly just the horror stories when people are way over?

I’ve wondered about this too, honestly. I’ve been with Hagerty for a few years now, and I was super nervous the first year because I took my car on a couple of longer trips than I planned. Ended up about 150 miles over the cap. When I renewed, I just mentioned it to the agent and she kind of laughed it off—said they’re really looking for folks who are using their “classic” as a daily driver, not someone who takes an extra Sunday cruise or two.

I haven’t personally heard of anyone getting denied for being just a bit over. The only real horror story I know was a guy who put like 10,000 miles on his ‘68 Mustang in a year and tried to claim it was just “parades and club meets.” That didn’t fly. But yeah, I get the paranoia. Insurance companies aren’t exactly known for their generosity when it comes to claims. I just try to keep it honest and if I think I’ll go over, I bump up the cap a bit. Peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks, for sure.

I get what you’re saying, but I’m honestly still a little wary. My buddy had a different experience—he was only about 300 miles over with his ‘72 Chevelle and when he had a fender bender, the adjuster asked for mileage logs. It worked out in the end, but it took months to get sorted. I just hate the idea of jumping through hoops if something happens, so I’ve stuck with regular insurance. The “classic” policy savings are tempting but not worth the stress for me. Maybe I’m just too cautious, but that’s how I sleep at night.

Totally get where you’re coming from. The peace of mind is worth a lot, honestly. I’ve had to send in mileage logs before and it’s a pain—especially if you drive your car more than you think. The savings are nice, but not if it keeps you up at night.

—but honestly, most classic policies aren’t as rigid as people think. I’ve seen folks fudge their mileage a bit or negotiate a higher cap. It’s not always as black-and-white as the paperwork makes it seem. If you’re only taking the car out on weekends, the savings can add up fast... but yeah, if you’re driving it everywhere, regular insurance probably makes more sense.

Yeah, I hear you—those mileage caps can be a pain if you’re itching to do longer trips. But in my experience, if you’re just cruising on weekends or hitting a few shows, the cap is rarely an issue. I’ve bumped up my cap once just by asking, no hassle. If you’re honest about your driving habits, most insurers are pretty reasonable... as long as you’re not daily commuting in your classic.
