Classic car insurance and the annual mileage cap - worth it?

feels like playing mileage roulette sometimes

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I’ve seen folks sweat bullets over a couple hundred extra miles, but unless you’re racking up cross-country numbers, it’s usually not a huge deal. Still, I get the nerves - my own odometer has given me side-eye more than once.

Mileage caps can definitely make you second-guess every little trip. I’ve seen claims get tricky when someone’s just a bit over, even if it’s not by much. Most companies aren’t out to get you for a few extra miles, but if there’s a big gap, it can get messy. Honestly, as long as you’re keeping it reasonable and not fudging the numbers, you’re probably fine. Just keep an eye on it - better safe than sorry.

I get where you’re coming from - those mileage caps can feel like a leash on your fun. A few years back, I nearly missed out on a local car show because I was worried about going over my limit. Ended up taking the risk, and nothing happened, but I did sweat a bit when renewal time came around. In my experience, as long as you’re not doubling your cap or something wild, most insurers don’t nitpick. Still, tracking miles is just part of the classic car game if you want those low premiums. Worth it for the savings, at least in my book.

Honestly, I get the savings, but those mileage caps are a dealbreaker for me. Here’s why:

- I drive my classic way more than just to shows or weekend cruises. The cap feels like a constant limit hanging over my head.
- One year, I went over by about 1,000 miles. My insurer jacked up my rate at renewal - no mercy.
- I’d rather pay a bit more and not stress about every trip.

Guess it depends how much you actually drive. For me, peace of mind beats a small discount.

Mileage caps are such a pain, honestly. I get why the insurance companies do it, but for folks who actually drive their classics more than just to the local show, it’s like you’re being punished for enjoying your own car. I’ve had a similar experience - went over my cap one year (wasn’t even by much), and suddenly my renewal was way higher. They didn’t care that it was just a few extra road trips.

Plus, if you’ve ever had a claim or even just a speeding ticket, they get even stricter. I’m considered “higher risk” because of my driving record, so they watch my mileage like a hawk. It’s stressful having to keep track of every mile, especially if you’re not just using the car as a garage queen.

Honestly, I’d rather pay more and not have to worry about getting dinged for actually using my car. The whole point is to drive and enjoy it, right? The discount’s nice, but not worth the hassle for me either.
