Fair points, but I'd argue there's a bit more flexibility than you're suggesting. From my experience:
- Insurers do have rigid guidelines, sure, but reps often have discretionary authority within certain limits.
- I've had luck getting payment timelines adjusted by clearly explaining my situation and politely pushing back.
- Planning ahead is ideal, but sometimes life throws curveballs... and that's exactly when knowing how to navigate exceptions can save your budget.
Not saying it's always easy or guaranteed, but there's usually more wiggle room than meets the eye.
"reps often have discretionary authority within certain limits."
Do they though? Maybe you've gotten lucky, but in my experience, reps usually just stick to the script. Sure, you can push back politely, but isn't it mostly a roll of the dice depending on who picks up your call? I've had situations where I've explained myself clearly, calmly, and still hit a brick wall. Flexibility sounds good on paper, but how reliable is it when you're actually counting on it...?
