Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

Yeah, I’ve run into this too and it’s honestly a headache. I always wonder if it’s just a way to make us give up and not use both. I usually ask at the counter, but half the time they’re not sure either. Once, I tried to split my stuff into two purchases and the cashier was cool with it, but another time they said no. It’s like, can we just get a straight answer? Makes me double-check everything before I even leave the house now.

It’s wild how inconsistent it is from store to store, or even cashier to cashier. I’ve had similar experiences—sometimes they’ll let me stack points and a coupon, sometimes it’s a flat-out no, and the reasoning always seems vague. I can’t help but wonder if it’s just a system limitation or if there’s some policy they don’t really want to spell out.

I get why stores have rules around stacking discounts, but the lack of clarity is what bugs me. I’ve even had managers give different answers on different days. Makes me think there’s some internal memo floating around that nobody actually reads. Has anyone ever gotten a written policy from a store about this? Or is it always just “depends on the day and who you ask”?

Honestly, I’ve had the same thing happen at my local pharmacy. One week, the cashier let me use my points and a coupon, no problem. Next time, different person, totally shut me down. I even asked if there was a written policy and just got a shrug. It’s like they’re making it up as they go sometimes... I get wanting to prevent double-dipping, but man, some consistency would be nice.

Yeah, I’ve noticed this too. Last month, I tried to use points and a manufacturer coupon on some snacks for a road trip—one cashier just scanned everything, no problem. A week later, different person, suddenly it’s “store policy” that I can’t combine them. Makes planning ahead kinda pointless if the rules change every time. Maybe they just don’t train everyone the same? It’s confusing for sure...

Honestly, this is exactly why I just stick to cash half the time. If I can’t count on the rules being the same every trip, what’s the point of all these “rewards” programs? Reminds me of when I tried to use a gas station rewards card and a coupon for windshield wipers—one guy just shrugged and did it, next time I got a lecture about “corporate policy.” Is it really that complicated, or do they just make it up as they go?

I get that stores have policies, but if even the employees can’t keep them straight, how are we supposed to? Maybe they need a laminated cheat sheet taped to every register. Or maybe I’m just getting cranky in my old age... Either way, it shouldn’t be this confusing to buy snacks.
