- Totally get what you mean about the fine print.
- I’ve actually had luck once or twice when I asked nicely—like, if the cashier seemed chill, they’d sometimes override it or at least try.
- Most of the time though, it’s a hard no, especially with bigger chains.
- It’s weird how much depends on who you talk to... some people just want to help, others stick to the rules no matter what.
- I always ask anyway—worst they can say is no, right?

Title: Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

Ugh, the fine print is basically my arch-nemesis. I swear, I spend more time squinting at exclusions than actually shopping. The “one or the other” rule with points and coupons always feels like a secret handshake I never learned.

I’ve tried the “ask nicely” route too—sometimes it works, sometimes you get the cashier who looks at you like you just asked for their PIN number. Once, I had a guy at the register who was clearly new, and he just shrugged and scanned both. For a second, I thought I’d cracked the code... until his manager swooped in from nowhere and voided the whole thing. Felt like I was in a spy movie, but with way less excitement and way more awkward silence.

Honestly, it reminds me of insurance claims sometimes—depends who’s handling your file. Some folks are all about helping you out, others stick to the script like their job depends on it (which, to be fair, it probably does). I get why they have rules, but man, it’s wild how much hinges on who’s behind the counter.

I still ask every time too. Worst case, it’s a no and a slightly annoyed sigh from the person behind me in line. Best case, you get lucky and score both discounts... which is about as rare as finding a parking spot up front on Black Friday.

- The “one or the other” rule always makes me double-check before I even get in line. I’ve seen people get pretty frustrated when they find out at the register, and honestly, I’d rather avoid that whole scene.
- It’s wild how inconsistent it is. Sometimes you get a cashier who’ll try to help, but usually, it’s just a flat no. I guess they’re just following policy, but it feels like there should be a clearer explanation somewhere.
- I kind of get why they do it—if everyone stacked points and coupons, maybe the store would lose too much money? Still, if you’ve earned both, it feels like you should be able to use them together.
- Has anyone ever actually read through all the fine print on those rewards programs? I tried once and gave up after two paragraphs. There’s always some weird restriction buried in there.
- Curious if anyone’s found a store that actually lets you stack both without hassle. Or is this just one of those things where the risk of trying isn’t worth the awkwardness at checkout?

- Yeah, the “one or the other” rule is just annoying. I’ve been caught off guard by it more than once, and it’s not like they make it obvious anywhere.
- The inconsistency between stores (or even cashiers) makes it worse. Sometimes you get lucky, but usually, they just point at the register and say nope.
- I get that they’re protecting their bottom line, but if you’ve put in the effort to rack up points and you’ve got a coupon, it feels like you should get to use both. That’s kind of the point of loyalty programs, right?
- Tried reading the fine print once… gave up. It’s like they want you to miss the rules so they can deny you at checkout.
- Haven’t found a store that lets you stack both without some kind of hassle. At this point, I just pick whichever one saves me more and move on. Not worth the awkward standoff at the register.
- Honestly, it feels like they could just say “no stacking” in big letters on the app or card. Would save everyone a lot of time and frustration.

Yeah, I’ve run into this too, and it’s frustrating when you think you’re about to save big, only to get shot down at the register. What’s worked for me is double-checking the app before I even get in line—sometimes there’s a tiny asterisk or a “details” link that spells it out, but you really have to hunt for it. I’ve also noticed that if you ask the cashier before you start scanning, you can sometimes avoid that awkward moment at the end. Not foolproof, but it’s saved me a bit of hassle. Honestly, I wish they’d just make it clearer up front, but until then, I just try to pick the better deal and keep my expectations low.
