Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

I’ve run into this too, and it’s honestly confusing. Sometimes I’ll ask if I can use my rewards plus a promo code, and the cashier just shrugs or says “the system won’t let me.” I get that businesses want to limit discounts, but if I’ve earned points and have a coupon, why shouldn’t both count? It’s not like I’m trying to double dip on the same deal. Has anyone actually read the fine print and figured out if there’s a real reason, or is it just store policy to make things harder? I feel like every place makes up their own rules.

I’ve noticed this too, and it’s kind of annoying when you’re trying to save a few bucks.

That’s exactly how I feel. I wonder if it’s just the POS system not being set up for it, or if there’s some legal/tax thing behind the scenes. Has anyone ever managed to get both discounts by asking a manager, or is it always a hard no?

Yeah, it bugs me too. I’ve tried to stack points and coupons at a few places—never works. Usually the cashier just shrugs and says the system won’t let them do it, even if you ask for a manager. I doubt it’s a legal thing, more like the company just doesn’t want to give away too much at once. They probably figure if you’re using one discount, you’ll still feel like you got a deal and won’t push harder.

Honestly, feels like they set it up this way on purpose. I mean, every time I’ve asked, it’s a straight-up “no.” Doesn’t matter if the points are from spending money there for months or whatever. Kind of kills the point of loyalty programs if you ask me... but maybe that’s what they want.

I get where you're coming from. It does seem counterintuitive—spend months accumulating points, then you’re told you can’t combine them with a coupon. From what I’ve read, it’s usually a policy built into their POS systems to avoid “double dipping.” Not illegal, just company policy. Some stores do allow stacking if you use a manufacturer coupon and store points, but it’s rare. I’ve found it helps to check the fine print or app FAQs before heading to the register... saves some frustration.

Had the same thing happen at the gas station last week—thought I was about to score a double discount, but nope. The cashier just gave me that “nice try” look. Honestly, it feels like they dangle those points just out of reach when you actually want to use them with a deal. I get why they do it, but man, it’s a letdown after all that penny-pinching. Guess I’ll keep reading the fine print... or just lower my expectations.
