Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

I totally get what you mean about it feeling stingy. There’s this coffee shop chain I used to go to on my way to work—nothing fancy, just a loyalty punch card and the occasional email coupon. One day, I tried to use my free drink reward with a 20% off coupon, and the cashier just shook her head and said, “Sorry, can’t stack.” I remember feeling kind of bummed, especially since I’d been going there a couple times a week for months.

But then again, I watched what happened at a sandwich place near my office when they did let people combine deals. People figured out all these hacks, and suddenly everyone was getting $12 lunches for like $2. The place was packed for weeks, but then they changed the rules and started making the rewards harder to earn. It’s like they overcorrected.

I do think there’s room for compromise, though. Maybe a special “loyalty day” where you can combine stuff, or like you said, once a quarter. Makes you feel appreciated without breaking the system. Right now, it does feel like a game of mental gymnastics just to get a decent deal.

I’ve had a similar thing happen at a gas station chain I frequent. They have a rewards app, and I racked up enough points for a free coffee, but when I tried to use that plus a “buy one get one half off” coupon, the register just beeped and the clerk shrugged. Felt weirdly stingy, especially since I’m always filling up there. But I get why they do it—if everyone started stacking, they’d probably lose money fast. Still, it does make you wonder if there’s a better middle ground.

Yeah, I’ve run into that too. It’s kind of a letdown when you think you’re getting a good deal, then the system just shuts it down. I get why they don’t want people stacking deals, but honestly, if you’re a regular customer, it feels like they could cut you some slack once in a while. I mean, I’m already spending a small fortune on gas every week for the family car... would a free coffee and a half-off donut really break the bank?

Yeah, I get what you mean—it feels a bit stingy when the system blocks you from using both at once. I know there are policies and all, but sometimes it just seems like common sense to reward loyal customers more. Maybe they think it’ll get out of hand if they make exceptions, but honestly... a coffee and a donut isn’t gonna bankrupt them.

Yeah, it’s kinda like when you bring your classic car to a show and they tell you “no, you can’t use your club discount on top of the event special.” I get that rules keep things tidy, but sometimes it feels like they miss the point—loyalty should count for something, even if it’s just a couple bucks.
