Prepping doesn’t stop chaos, but it sure makes my job easier when folks have their stuff together.

Couldn’t agree more. My first accident, I was a total mess—couldn’t find my insurance card, phone at 5%, and of course, the tow truck guy needed everything right then. Now I keep a folder in the glove box and a backup in my email. Also, snacks. Trust me, waiting for insurance on an empty stomach is its own kind of pain.

I get the whole prepping thing, but honestly, I feel like no matter how much I try to plan, something always goes sideways. Like, I had all my paperwork in the glove box, but then I was so frazzled after my first fender bender that I just blanked on where anything was. Snacks are smart, but I’d probably forget those too if I’m stressed. Maybe it’s just me, but I kinda think you can’t ever be totally ready for that first accident...

I totally get where you’re coming from—no matter how much you prep, real life just doesn’t go by the book. I remember my first accident, I’d rehearsed what to do in my head a million times, but when it actually happened, my mind just went blank. Ended up fumbling through my glove box for like five minutes before I even found my insurance card.

Did you find dealing with the insurance company afterward was as stressful as the accident itself? For me, that was almost worse than the crash. They kept asking for info I didn’t even realize I’d need to write down at the scene. Makes me wonder if there’s any way to actually feel prepared, or if it’s always gonna be a mess the first time. How did you handle the follow-up stuff—calls, paperwork, all that?

Yeah, I hear you—honestly, the paperwork and back-and-forth with insurance can be just as nerve-wracking as the accident itself. People always think they’ll remember every detail, but in the moment, it’s easy to forget stuff like getting the other driver’s info or snapping photos. The system isn’t exactly user-friendly either... half the time, folks don’t even know what documents they’ll need until someone asks for them. I wish there was a foolproof way to prep, but even with checklists, things get missed. It’s rarely smooth the first time around, but it does get easier once you’ve been through it.

Honestly, the first time I dealt with insurance after a fender bender, I was more stressed about the costs than anything else. The forms and calls were a pain, but I kept thinking about my deductible and how much my premium might go up. I started keeping a cheap disposable camera in my glove box after that—phones die or get smashed, but a camera’s always ready. Not foolproof, but it’s saved me once already.
