Why California’s minimum car insurance might not be enough

I used to think the minimum was fine until my friend got rear-ended and the other driver’s insurance barely covered a fraction of her medical bills. Watching her scramble to pay the rest made me rethink my own policy real quick. It’s just not worth the risk.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. Minimum coverage looks fine on paper, especially when you’re trying to keep costs down. But it’s wild how fast those limits get eaten up if someone actually gets hurt. Medical bills can be brutal, even for what seems like a “minor” accident.

I used to think upping my liability was just throwing money away, but after seeing the numbers—like, $15k for injuries per person? That barely scratches the surface if someone ends up in the hospital. It’s not just about protecting your car anymore, it’s about not getting stuck with someone else’s bills or worse, getting sued for everything you’ve got.

I know some folks still roll the dice because they figure they’re careful drivers. But accidents happen, even to the best of us. I bumped up my policy a bit last year and honestly, the extra cost wasn’t as bad as I expected. Peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks a month.

You’re right, it’s just not worth the gamble. I’d rather cut back somewhere else than risk being underinsured if something goes sideways.

Yeah, I hear you. I used to think the same—like, why pay more if I’m a careful driver and haven’t had a ticket in years? But then my neighbor’s kid got into a fender bender, and even though nobody was seriously hurt, the bills were way more than their policy covered. They ended up paying out of pocket for months. Kinda made me rethink things. It’s annoying how fast those medical costs add up... but you’re right, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’m not sure higher coverage always makes sense for everyone. I mean,

“the bills were way more than their policy covered. They ended up paying out of pocket for months.”
That’s rough, but if you’ve got savings and rarely drive in high-risk areas, minimum coverage might still be reasonable. It’s just hard to justify the extra cost if your risk is genuinely low. Guess it depends on how much risk you’re comfortable with.

Had a buddy with a mint ’67 Mustang who figured the same—bare minimum, hardly took it out except for Sunday spins. Then some guy rear-ended him at a light. The repairs and medical bills? Way over what insurance covered. Even with savings, he was hurting for a while. Sometimes you think you’re low risk until luck flips the script...
