Why California’s minimum car insurance might not be enough

Had the same mindset for years, honestly—figured my old Honda wasn’t worth much, and minimum coverage was fine. Then I rear-ended someone in stop-and-go traffic. Their bumper looked fine, but the repair bill was wild, and my insurance barely covered it. Ended up paying out of pocket for the rest. Didn’t expect that at all. Sometimes it’s not about your car, but what you might hit… That said, I still hate how expensive it gets, especially with a couple tickets on my record. Just feels like a gamble either way.

Honestly, I’m just now shopping for insurance and this is exactly the kind of thing that’s stressing me out. I keep looking at my old Civic thinking, “Why pay for more than the bare minimum?” But hearing stories like yours makes me rethink it. Didn’t realize how fast those repair bills add up, even if the damage looks tiny. The rates are brutal though, especially in Cali… Feels like you’re stuck either way—pay more now or risk paying way more later. Not sure there’s a good answer, but I guess I’d rather not get blindsided.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I used to roll with just the minimum on my old Corolla, thinking it wasn’t worth paying extra. Then someone sideswiped me in a parking lot and bailed—the repairs were way more than I expected, and insurance barely covered anything. It stings paying those higher rates, but after that mess, I upped my coverage a bit. Still feels like a ripoff sometimes, but at least I sleep better knowing I won’t get totally wrecked by one bad day.

Yeah, I hear this a lot. Minimum coverage looks cheap till you actually need it—then you find out how little it really does. People think they’re saving money, but one accident and you’re out way more than the extra premium would’ve cost. Seen too many folks regret it after the fact. California’s repair costs are no joke either.

I used to think minimum coverage was fine, but after looking at the numbers, it’s kind of wild how fast costs add up if you’re in a real accident. Even a fender bender can go over those limits, especially with newer cars or if someone gets hurt. I get why people want to save money, but it’s almost like gambling with your future finances. Not saying everyone needs max coverage, but the minimum just feels risky in California.
