- Been there with the sticker shock after a fender bender—parts for older cars aren’t cheap either.
- I’ve always carried more than the minimum, mostly because I’d hate to see my ‘68 Chevelle totaled and get peanuts back.
- Never regretted paying extra, but sometimes I do wonder if I’m just feeding the insurance machine...
- If you’ve got something rare or pricey, minimums feel like playing roulette, honestly.

I get what you mean about feeling like you’re just paying into a system that rarely pays back. Still, I’ve seen friends get burned by sticking with the minimum—one accident and suddenly they’re on the hook for way more than they expected. Has anyone actually had to use their higher coverage and felt it was worth it?

Had a fender bender last year—my fault, not proud of it. The other driver’s car was way more expensive than mine, and the repair bill shot past what minimum coverage would’ve handled. If I’d stuck with the bare minimum, I’d still be paying off the difference. It stings to pay higher premiums, but honestly, that extra coverage saved me from a financial mess. California’s minimums just don’t cut it if you’re unlucky or drive a lot like I do.

Yeah, I hear you. The minimums look fine on paper until something actually happens... then it’s a whole different story. I’ve always leaned towards more coverage, especially with kids in the car and all the crazy drivers out there. It’s not fun paying more every month, but that peace of mind is worth it. You did the right thing, even if it stings a bit.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I used to think the minimums were enough too, but then my friend got rear-ended and the other driver’s insurance barely covered anything. She ended up paying a bunch out of pocket. Kinda made me rethink the whole “just enough” coverage thing. It’s annoying to pay more, but honestly, I’d rather skip a few lattes than risk getting stuck with a huge bill if something goes sideways.
