how bad does a DUI mess up your insurance in CA?

Yeah, that's pretty spot-on. I've seen plenty of cases where a DUI in California can easily double or even triple someone's insurance premiums overnight. And it's not just a short-term spike eitherβ€”most insurers will keep those rates elevated for at least three to five years, sometimes longer depending on the company and your driving record afterward.

Another thing people don't always realize is that after a DUI, you're usually required to file an SR-22 form with the DMV. This isn't insurance itself, but it's basically proof from your insurer that you're carrying the required coverage. The catch is, not all insurers offer SR-22 filings, so you might have to switch companies, and that alone can push your rates up even more.

I had a client a couple years back who got hit with a DUI, and he ended up paying nearly triple his old rate. He was shocked at first, but honestly, that's pretty typical. He eventually got his rates down again after about four years of clean driving, but it was a long and expensive road.

And yeah, when you crunch the numbers, ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft are way cheaper in comparison. Even if you use them regularly, it's still nothing compared to what you'll pay in increased premiums over several years. Plus, avoiding the headache of dealing with the DMV and insurance paperwork is worth it all by itself...

Yeah, learned this the hard way myself. Got a DUI about three years ago, and my insurance premiums shot up overnightβ€”more than doubled, actually. Had to switch insurers too, because mine didn't offer SR-22 filings. Honestly, the paperwork alone was a nightmare.

I did the math after a few months and realized I could've taken Uber everywhere for years and still saved money compared to what I'm paying now. It's slowly getting better with a clean record, but man, it's been rough on my wallet. Definitely makes you rethink your choices...

Yeah, that's toughβ€”insurance companies really hammer you for DUIs. You might check around every year or so; some insurers ease up quicker than others, especially once you're past the 3-year mark. Saved me a decent chunk doing that.

Yeah, insurance after a DUI is no joke... feels like they're charging you for a Ferrari when you're driving a beat-up Civic. Hang in there though, it does get betterβ€”just gotta ride out the rough patch.

Haha, exactly my experience. A few things I've noticed:
- Premiums basically doubled overnight.
- Took about 3 years before rates started dropping noticeably.
- Shopping around helped a bit, but honestly, patience was key.

Hang tight...it does ease up eventually.
