Yeah, it’s wild how much your zip code can swing the price. I had a similar thing happen when I moved just a few blocks over—literally the same city, but my rate jumped like $30 a month. It’s not even a “bad” area, just statistically more claims or something. I get that insurance is all about risk pools and averages, but it does feel like they ignore the stuff you actually do to keep your car safe.
I’ve tried mentioning my building’s garage and security cameras to different companies, but most of them just shrugged it off. Some will give you a tiny discount for an alarm system or steering wheel lock, but it barely makes a dent. It’s kind of annoying because you’d think they’d want to reward people who take extra steps.
Honestly, sometimes I wonder if shopping around every year is the only way to keep them honest. The whole system feels like it’s set up for their convenience, not ours... but what can you do?
- Been there, felt that pain. Moved across town once and my rate shot up for no reason I could see—felt like I was being charged for someone else’s bad luck.
- The “garage discount” is a joke, honestly. I park in a locked garage with cameras and still only get a couple bucks off. Meanwhile, my buddy with street parking pays less just because his zip code has fewer claims.
- Shopping around is pretty much the only way I’ve found to keep things reasonable. Loyalty doesn’t seem to matter much to these companies.
- At this point, I just treat insurance like cable—switch every year or two and hope for the best.
