The zip code thing is nuts too... my buddy moved two blocks and his rate shot up $200 a year. Makes you wonder what they’re really basing it on.

That’s wild, and honestly, I’ve wondered the same. It feels like there’s some secret formula behind those rates—like, does a moose cross the street more often in one zip code than another? I get keeping comp/collision for peace of mind, though. Even if your car isn’t worth much, the cost of repairs after an “Alaska moment” can be brutal. Yeah, insurance pricing can feel like it’s based on a roll of the dice sometimes. I’ve noticed the same thing—moved a few blocks and my premium jumped, too. It’s frustrating, but you’re right about keeping comp/collision. Alaska roads aren’t exactly forgiving.

Honestly, I get the logic behind keeping comp/collision, but sometimes I wonder if it’s overkill for older cars. My ‘09 Subaru’s worth less than my deductible at this point… I just cross my fingers and drive slow on the ice.

That’s a super common dilemma, honestly. Have you checked what your premium would drop to if you dropped comp/collision? Sometimes it’s not as big a savings as people hope, but other times it’s a decent chunk. Have you thought about just keeping liability? I get nervous about icy roads too, but if the payout wouldn’t even cover a repair, is it worth paying extra every month? Just curious how you’re weighing that peace of mind vs. the actual numbers.

I totally get the urge to just keep liability when your car’s not worth much anymore. I did that with my old Tacoma once it hit the “not worth fixing” stage. Here’s how I looked at it: First, I checked what my comp/collision was actually costing me per year. Then I compared that to what I’d realistically get if the car got totaled (minus the deductible). For me, the math just didn’t add up—especially since I drive pretty cautiously in winter.

But then there’s always that nagging “what if” feeling, especially with black ice and moose popping out of nowhere. Do you factor in stuff like rental coverage or roadside assistance? Sometimes those are bundled in, and dropping comp/collision can mess with that. Curious if you’ve ever had to use any of those extras, or if you just figure it’s not worth the extra cash for an older ride.
