anyone else feel like AAA insurance isn't what it used to be?

I get where you're coming from, but I’m not sure it’s all bad. Here’s my take:

- The smaller network might actually mean they’re filtering out shops that weren’t up to standard. I’ve had a couple of bad experiences with “reputable” places that didn’t know how to handle high-end systems or tech.
- For me, I’d rather have fewer options if it means the shops left actually know what they’re doing with newer models and luxury brands.
- I do wish they’d be more transparent about who’s in the network and why, though. The guessing game part is real, and it’s a pain when you’re stranded.
- I’ve started calling ahead before I need anything, just to make sure the shop is still covered and can handle my car. Not ideal, but it’s saved me some headaches.

It’s not perfect, but I’d rather deal with a smaller, vetted list than risk someone messing up my ride. Maybe it’s just a tradeoff these days...

Man, that guessing game is the worst. I had a client last year who thought their favorite shop was still in-network, only to find out (after a tow, of course) that it got dropped. Cue the awkward phone calls and a very grumpy Tuesday afternoon. I get the whole “quality over quantity” thing, but it’d be nice if they just sent out a heads-up when they make changes. Or at least a “hey, your go-to spot is out, here’s who’s in” kind of text.

I will say, I’ve seen some real horror shows at those “all makes welcome” places. One guy tried to fix a Tesla with duct tape and a prayer. So yeah, smaller network isn’t always a bad thing, but man, the communication could use a tune-up. I guess it’s like picking a barber—fewer choices, but at least you know you won’t walk out with a mullet (unless you want one).

Honestly, this is exactly why I keep a spreadsheet of approved shops on my phone. Maybe that’s overkill, but after getting burned twice—once with a “network” shop that didn’t actually take my policy anymore—I’m not risking it. The lack of updates is just wild in 2024. It’s not like texting out a quick change log should be rocket science. I get wanting to keep the network tight, but if you’re gonna do that, at least make it easy for us to know where we stand. Otherwise, you’re right—it’s basically car repair roulette.

Yeah, I totally get the spreadsheet thing. I’ve got a note on my phone with “approved” shops and a bunch of crossed-out ones after some, let’s say, less-than-stellar experiences. Last time, I drove 30 minutes out of my way because the shop was “in network,” only to find out they dropped AAA like two months before. The guy at the counter just shrugged and said, “Happens all the time.” Not exactly reassuring.

Honestly, it feels like they’re making it harder than it needs to be. I mean, we can track pizza deliveries to the minute but can’t get a simple update on which shops are covered? My neighbor jokes that picking a repair shop is like spinning a wheel on a game show—except the prize is usually a headache.

I get that networks change, but a little heads-up would go a long way. At this point, I half-expect to see my local mechanic’s name disappear from the list every time I need him.

Totally get where you're coming from. I’ve had similar issues with the “in network” list being out of date. Here’s what’s worked for me lately:

- Before heading out, I always call both AAA and the shop to double-check they’re still partnered. It’s annoying, but it’s saved me a wasted trip more than once.
- If you use the AAA app, sometimes it updates faster than their website (weird, but true in my experience).
- I started keeping receipts and notes on which shops actually honored the coverage, just in case there’s ever a dispute.

It shouldn’t be this complicated, honestly. You’d think with all the tech out there, they could keep their lists current. Still beats rolling the dice and hoping for the best, I guess...
