My annual mileage estimate may be higher than my typical driving

How do insurers expect annual mileage to be estimated: based on the past 12 months, or on a reasonable expectation for the coming year? A temporary spell of less driving could make the recent total unrepresentative.

If actual mileage stays lower, is that something to report midterm, or is renewal the usual time to update it? I’m also curious what records insurers accept, if any, and whether a lower estimate affects only the premium or can change other policy terms.

There may not be one record every insurer accepts. If they ask for proof of a lower estimate, check whether dated odometer readings or service records showing mileage meet their requirements before relying on them. That way, you’ll know what evidence is useful to keep.
