If your auto-insurance renewal jumps, is it generally safer to increase your comprehensive and collision deductibles, or remove one of those coverages? Raising a deductible can reduce the premium while keeping coverage in place, but you’d need to be comfortable paying more out of pocket after a covered claim. I’d compare the deductible with money you could realistically set aside, not just the premium savings. Dropping optional coverage may save more, especially on an older vehicle with limited value, but it leaves you paying for repairs or replacing the car after a covered loss. Collision can be important if you couldn’t afford to repair or replace the vehicle yourself. Comprehensive can matter for theft, weather, animal strikes, and similar non-collision losses. A lender or lease company may also require both. How are others comparing these choices? The vehicle’s value isn’t the whole story when weighing collision, as AutoMike_84 noted. A low-value car can still be hard to replace quickly; compare the premium savings with how long it’d take to rebuild a replacement-car fund and manage without the car if it were totaled.
