I hear you on the tech being a pain—those little trackers always make me paranoid I’m gonna get dinged for braking too hard. I tried Root for a bit, but honestly, I’m still figuring out if it’s worth the trade-off. Kinda wish there was a middle ground between the old-school plans and these new data-hungry ones...

Honestly, those trackers stress me out too. I’ve got a couple speeding tickets on my record, so I’m already paying through the nose. Tried Progressive’s Snapshot and it felt like every hard stop or late-night drive was just another reason for them to jack up my rates. I get that they want “safe” drivers, but sometimes you gotta brake hard—life happens. The old-school plans at least didn’t judge every move. Not sure these new ones are worth the hassle if you’re not a perfect driver.

- Couldn’t agree more. My ‘72 Chevelle doesn’t exactly have “gentle” brakes, so those trackers would probably think I’m running from the law every time I stop for a red light.
- Mileage-based sounds cool in theory, but if they’re tracking every move, I’d rather just pay the flat rate and not worry about it.
- Plus, what about folks with older cars? Some of us don’t even have a spot to plug those things in...

Totally get where you’re coming from about those trackers and older cars. My daily’s a ‘98 Camry, and it’s not exactly “smart” by today’s standards. I looked into one of those mileage-based deals a while back, but honestly, the idea of plugging in a dongle or using an app that’s always watching just didn’t sit right with me. I’m careful on the road, but sometimes you have to slam the brakes or take a weird turn—life isn’t always smooth driving.

I’ve heard some companies will send you a device that just reads mileage from your OBD port, but like you said, not every car has one, or it’s buried somewhere awkward. Plus, I don’t love the idea of my insurance company knowing every time I go out for milk or take the long way home. Maybe I’m just old school, but paying a flat rate feels simpler and less invasive.

Still, I get why people like the idea if they barely drive or have a newer car that makes it easy. But for those of us with older rides, or anyone who values privacy, it’s not quite there yet. Maybe if they come up with something less intrusive down the line, I’d reconsider. For now, I’ll stick with what works and keep my foot ready for those “life happens” moments at the stoplight.

I hear you on the privacy thing—having a tracker in my car just feels like too much oversight, even if it saves a few bucks. Plus, with older cars, those OBD ports are a pain to get to. I’d rather pay a little more for peace of mind and not worry about some app dinging me for a hard brake when a squirrel darts out. Maybe these programs make sense for folks with newer cars or who barely drive, but for me, flat rate is just less hassle.
