Totally get what you mean. My minivan barely leaves the neighborhood except for Costco runs and shuttling kids, so pay-per-mile has actually saved us a bit. But yeah, I’d never trust it with my uncle’s ‘68 Camaro—he’d bankrupt himself just going to car shows.

I hear you on the Camaro—my dad’s got a classic Mustang and he’d probably set a new record for “most expensive Sunday drive.” I’ve been using Metromile for my little hatchback, and it’s been decent so far. Not sure I’d trust it if I had a lead foot though...

Mileage-based insurance has been on my radar, but I keep hesitating. We’ve got a minivan and a compact sedan—mostly school runs, groceries, the usual. A friend tried Metromile and liked it, but I wonder how it handles occasional road trips. Does it spike your rates if you suddenly rack up miles one month? I’d hate to get dinged just for a family vacation. Also, does anyone else worry about the little tracker thingy? I’m not super paranoid, but I do wonder what data they’re pulling besides mileage...

Mileage-based insurance sounded great to me at first, but I got hung up on the same stuff—especially the tracker. I mean, I trust myself, but do I trust a little black box not to rat me out for a late-night Taco Bell run? As for road trips, my cousin did Metromile for a while and said one big trip didn’t totally wreck his rate, but if you start racking up miles every month, it adds up. I guess if you’re mostly local, it could save you money, but I’m still on the fence. The data thing nags at me too... what else are they watching?

- Totally get your hesitation about the tracker—having a high-end car, I’m always a bit paranoid about who’s collecting what data.
- The “one big trip” thing is what worries me too. I don’t drive a ton, but when I do, it’s usually a long haul.
- Data privacy nags at me. Are they just counting miles, or are they tracking speed, routes, stops? Makes me wonder...
- If you’re mostly city driving, though, I can see how it’d save some cash. I’m tempted, but not quite sold either.
