Could renovation supply runs affect a UBI score?
Discussion options
Does a usage-based insurance program score only recorded driving patterns, or can it take trip purpose into account too? I’m curious whether carrying bulky materials or making several hardware-store stops could matter if the driving itself is ordinary, and whether a program focused mainly on mileage treats that differently from one that scores driving behavior.
There’s a separate wrinkle if the supply run involves a rental or borrowed van rather than the insured car. Before changing vehicles or making repeated renovation-related trips, what would you ask the insurer about how those trips are recorded and whether temporary changes in vehicle use need to be reported?

A hardware-store stop or bulky load wouldn’t establish the trip’s purpose by itself. Ask the insurer what the program records and uses: it might track mileage or driving events such as braking and acceleration, but the scoring rules determine what affects the score. Also ask whether trips in a rental or borrowed van are included and whether temporary vehicle use needs to be reported; that can depend on the program and policy.
