How picking a “boring” car turned into a wallet win

I get where you’re coming from, but have you ever looked into how much the “boring” car label actually impacts insurance rates? Sometimes it’s less about the model being flashy and more about theft rates or repair costs for that specific make. For example, Civics are reliable, but they’re also pretty high on the list for theft in some areas - did that factor into your premiums at all? I’ve seen people surprised when their “safe” choice wasn’t as cheap to insure as they expected. Just curious if you ran into anything like that.

That’s a good point about Civics. I actually ran into something similar with my Corolla - thought it’d be a “cheap to insure” pick, but the rates were higher than I expected.

“Sometimes it’s less about the model being flashy and more about theft rates or repair costs for that specific make.”

- Repair costs and theft stats definitely factored in. My agent mentioned parts availability too.
- Ended up comparing a few “boring” models and was surprised how much the rates varied.

You’re not alone - sometimes the safe bet isn’t as wallet-friendly as it looks on paper. Still, I think you made a smart move looking beyond just the sticker price.

Yeah, it’s wild how “boring” doesn’t always mean “cheap” when it comes to insurance. I used to think a beige sedan was the golden ticket for low rates, but apparently thieves love them too. Guess popularity isn’t always a good thing for your wallet…

Yeah, it’s honestly kind of a joke how insurance works sometimes. People always say “just get a boring car, you’ll save money,” but then you find out those same cars are on every thief’s wishlist. I had a friend who bought a silver Camry thinking he’d be invisible to everyone - including his insurance company - and then his rates went up because apparently Camrys are stolen all the time. It’s like you can’t win.

But hey, at least you’re paying attention to this stuff now. Most people just assume the stereotypes are true and get burned later. I’d rather drive something I actually like than pick a “safe” option that ends up costing more anyway. Popularity is overrated when it comes to cars and wallets... sometimes being basic just makes you an easy target.

Man, the Camry thing cracks me up because I literally thought about getting one for that exact reason - just blend in and cruise under the radar. Turns out, you’re basically driving around in a giant “steal me” sign. My neighbor’s Accord got swiped last year, and he was convinced it was the safest, most boring choice possible. Guess not.

I ended up with a weird old hatchback that nobody wants to steal or insure at a high rate… probably because it’s worth about as much as a fancy toaster. It rattles and squeaks but hey, insurance is cheap and nobody gives it a second glance except maybe out of pity. Sometimes being “unique” actually pays off - at least until I need parts.

Insurance logic is wild though. You’d think they’d reward you for not picking something flashy, but nope, they just find another way to get you.
