Tried temporary insurance coverage—worth it or waste of money?

That's definitely a useful point to consider, but I'd still recommend being cautious about relying solely on credit card perks for rental coverage—especially if you're renting something a bit more specialized or valuable than your typical economy sedan. I went through this myself when renting a classic car for a weekend event. At first glance, my card seemed to offer decent protection, but after reading the fine print, I realized that coverage exclusions were pretty extensive. Vintage cars, luxury models, and even some SUVs were explicitly excluded from coverage.

Also, another thing to keep in mind is that credit card insurance usually provides secondary coverage rather than primary. That means if anything happens, you'd have to file first with your own auto insurance policy—which could potentially raise your premiums down the road. Temporary standalone rental policies, on the other hand, often provide primary coverage and might help you avoid involving your personal policy altogether.

I learned this the hard way when a friend rented a gorgeous '67 Mustang convertible for his wedding weekend. Unfortunately, he got rear-ended at a stoplight (nothing serious, thankfully), and while his credit card technically covered rental damage, it was considered secondary. He had to file with his regular insurer first and ended up dealing with higher premiums long after the wedding was over.

So yeah, checking your credit card perks is smart advice for everyday rentals...but if you're dealing with unusual or high-value vehicles—or just want peace of mind—temporary standalone insurance might actually be worth the extra money. Just food for thought!

Yeah, I hear you on this one. I rented a Jeep Wrangler last summer for a camping trip, and my credit card coverage specifically excluded off-road vehicles. Glad I double-checked beforehand...temporary insurance was definitely worth the peace of mind.

Good call checking the fine print on your credit card coverage beforehand—it's surprising how many people overlook that detail. Temporary insurance can seem like an unnecessary extra, but in situations like yours, it truly makes sense. Credit card coverage often has very specific exclusions, especially for off-road or specialty vehicles. I've seen plenty of cases where people assumed they were covered, only to find out too late that their vehicle type or activity voided the protection. It's always better to spend a little upfront than risk facing a hefty out-of-pocket expense later. Glad your camping trip went smoothly without the added stress of insurance worries...peace of mind is definitely underrated.

Definitely smart to double-check those details beforehand. I've always wondered how reliable credit card coverage really is, especially for more adventurous trips. Good to hear it worked out smoothly for you—might reconsider temporary insurance myself next time I'm planning something similar.

Good call on double-checking—credit card coverage can be hit-or-miss, especially with family trips. A few years back, we had a minor fender-bender on vacation... temporary insurance saved us some headaches. Definitely worth considering for peace of mind.
