BORROWING A FRIEND'S CAR? HERE'S SOMETHING I JUST FOUND OUT
The “check your own policy first” advice is solid, but the details can vary a lot by state and policy wording. Permissive-use coverage may apply when the owner lets you drive, while non-owned-vehicle coverage can have different limits and exclusions.
One easy-to-miss issue is whether the car is regularly available to you. A vehicle you borrow occasionally may be treated differently from one kept at your home or routinely used, and some policies exclude the latter. I’d specifically ask the insurer about permissive use, non-owned vehicles, liability limits, and whether that particular borrowing arrangement is excluded. A general “yes, you’re covered” may not tell the whole story.
