I get where you’re coming from, but I’m still a bit wary of those trackers. My cousin tried one and got dinged for “hard braking” when a deer ran out in front of him—like, what was he supposed to do? I like the idea of data, but sometimes it feels like the device doesn’t get the whole story. The course at least gave me some peace of mind, even if it’s not as “quantifiable.” Maybe I’m just old school, but I’d rather not have my every move tracked if I can help it.

I totally get your hesitation with those trackers. It’s one thing to encourage safer driving, but it’s another to have a device judge you for reacting to something unpredictable—like a deer! I’ve heard similar stories from friends, and honestly, I’d rather trust my own judgment than have an algorithm decide if I’m “safe” or not. The defensive driving course feels more practical to me, too. At least you know what you’re being evaluated on, and it’s not just some black box spitting out scores.

Yeah, I hear you on the trackers. They sound good in theory, but in real life? Too many variables they just can’t account for. I’ve seen folks get dinged for slamming the brakes to avoid a squirrel—like, what are you supposed to do? Defensive driving courses at least make sense, and you know what you’re getting into. Plus, the discount’s usually pretty solid.

Right? Last week my car’s tracker gave me a “hard braking” warning because a pigeon decided to play chicken with my front bumper. I swear, these things are better at tracking wildlife than actual reckless driving. Defensive driving courses at least don’t judge you for saving small animals...and honestly, the insurance discount was better than what I got from the tracker anyway. If I’m going to be monitored, I’d rather it be by a human than an algorithm with a grudge against city squirrels.

Honestly, those trackers can be a pain. I’ve racked up so many “hard braking” alerts just trying to avoid delivery bikes and jaywalkers—sometimes you gotta hit the brakes, or you’re the one getting dinged for a fender bender. The insurance discount from the course was way better than the tracker’s “safe driver” thing, at least for me. Algorithms don’t get context...they just see numbers. I’ll take a real person reviewing my driving any day, even if I’ve got a few dings on my record.
