You make a good point there—dealing with a few impatient drivers is definitely preferable to handling the aftermath of an accident. From my experience, insurance claims can get messy quickly, even when you're clearly not at fault. Defensive driving courses might seem overly optimistic at times, but they do equip you with habits that genuinely reduce risk. I've seen countless claims that could've been avoided if someone had just left a bit more space or anticipated another driver's mistake. Sure, it's not always fair having to compensate for others' poor driving, but in the long run, your wallet (and stress levels) will thank you. Sounds like you're already making smart decisions on the road... keep it up.

Totally agree with you on insurance claims being a nightmare... been there myself after someone rear-ended my Mustang. Defensive driving courses might feel like common sense stuff, but it's surprising how often those little habits save your neck (and your classic car). Good call taking the course.

I've been thinking about taking one myself, but honestly, do you think defensive driving courses really make that big of a difference for high-risk drivers? I mean, I've had my share of close calls (and maybe a speeding ticket or two...), and while saving money on insurance sounds great, I'm wondering if the course actually changes driving habits long-term. Did you notice yourself consciously applying what you learned afterward, or was it more of a short-term thing?

Also curious—did your insurance company offer the discount automatically after you finished, or did you have to jump through hoops to get it applied? Knowing insurance companies, I'd bet on hoops...

Honestly, from what I've seen, it depends a lot on the driver. Some folks genuinely benefit and start driving more cautiously, especially if the course highlights real-life scenarios or consequences. But for others, it's just a quick fix to lower premiums. Insurance-wise, most companies I've dealt with apply the discount pretty smoothly once you submit proof—no major hoops, just a bit of paperwork. Might be worth it either way, even if just for the savings...

Took one of these defensive driving courses a couple years back, mostly to knock some money off my insurance. Here's what I've noticed personally:

- Short-term, yeah, it definitely made me more aware. For a few months I caught myself doing mirror checks more often, leaving extra space between cars, stuff like that.
- Long-term though? Honestly... habits creep back in. After about 6 months or so, I was pretty much back to my old driving style—maybe slightly better at anticipating other drivers' moves, but nothing dramatic.
- The course itself was decent enough. They showed some intense videos of accidents and near misses that stuck with me for a while. But once life gets busy again, it's easy to slip back into autopilot mode.
- Insurance-wise, totally worth it. Discount was straightforward and saved me a decent chunk each renewal period. No regrets there.

I think if you're naturally cautious or had a close call recently, the lessons stick better. But for most people (myself included), it's probably more about the savings than any lasting change in driving behavior.
