Saw a news story yesterday about a pretty nasty accident down in Charleston. Apparently, the driver at fault only had the bare minimum insurance required by South Carolina law, and now the other driver is stuck with some hefty medical bills. Got me curious, so I looked it upβturns out the minimum coverage here is just $25k per person for injuries, $50k total per accident, and $25k for property damage. Honestly, that seems kinda low considering how expensive hospital stays and car repairs can get these days.
I mean, imagine someone totals your brand-new SUV or sends you to the ER for surgery... $25k probably wouldn't even scratch the surface. But then again, higher minimums might mean higher premiums for everyone, and not everyone can afford that. I'm kinda torn on this one, you know? Curious what other folks think about thisβdo you feel comfortable driving around knowing other drivers might have such minimal coverage? Or is it just one of those risks we gotta accept?
