Are those price-checker sites actually reliable?

Had a similar experience when shopping around for tires on my Audi last summer. The price-checker showed a pretty tempting deal, but when I called the shop directly, they mentioned some mandatory "installation package" that wasn't listed online. Makes me wonder—are these sites intentionally vague about extra fees, or is it just poor communication between them and the shops? Either way, I've learned to always call ahead and clarify before getting too excited about a deal...

Yeah, I feel you on this one. Honestly, I think it's a bit of both. I've run into similar situations a couple times myself—once with tires and another time when trying to book a hotel room through one of those price-comparison sites. Online, the price looked unbeatable, but when I got to checkout, suddenly there were these random "resort fees" that basically doubled the cost... so frustrating.

My guess is that these comparison sites want to show the lowest price possible upfront to attract clicks and attention. They're probably not outright lying or anything shady like that, but they're definitely leaving out some key details. And then you've got the actual businesses themselves—the tire shops or hotels—that maybe aren't always clear with the comparison sites about what exactly their prices include (or don't include), so things get lost in translation.

I think your approach of calling ahead is spot-on. It's annoying having to do that extra bit of legwork when you're already using a site that's supposed to simplify things—but hey, better safe than sorry, right? I've started doing that too whenever I'm making bigger purchases or bookings online. It saves a lot of headaches later on.

Anyway, don't let it get you down too much... we've all been there at some point. At least now you're prepared and know what to watch out for next time around.

Had a similar issue when I was shopping around for new brake pads. The site showed a great deal, but at checkout, suddenly there's shipping, handling, and some vague "processing fee"... now I always double-check directly with the seller first. Lesson learned the hard way, unfortunately.

Yeah, been there myself. Those hidden fees can really sneak up on you, especially when you're trying to budget carefully for car maintenance. A few months back, I was looking for replacement tires and found what seemed like an unbeatable price online. But sure enough, at checkout, they tacked on disposal fees, shipping charges, and some vague "environmental surcharge"—whatever that means...

Now I always make it a habit to read the fine print and even call customer service if something seems off. Price-checker sites can be helpful as a starting point, but they're definitely not foolproof. Good on you for catching it early and adjusting your approach. It's frustrating, but at least we learn from these experiences and become smarter shoppers in the long run.

Honestly, those price-checker sites have burned me too. I remember shopping around for brake pads—thought I'd found a steal until the checkout added some random handling fee. Ever wonder how they justify these charges...? Now I always confirm directly before trusting the listed price.
