Are those price-checker sites actually reliable?

I've had mixed luck with those price-checker apps myself. They're handy for a quick glance, but like you said, timestamps are key. I've noticed that sometimes the prices update super fast, other times they're hours behind reality—especially during busy travel weekends or holidays.

Honestly, I've learned to treat them more as a rough guide rather than gospel. If I'm already on a tight schedule or in an unfamiliar area, chasing down a few cents per gallon just isn't worth the hassle or risk. Had a close call once trying to save maybe two bucks total—ended up nearly clipping someone merging back onto the main road. Definitely not my finest moment...

Now I mostly stick to stations I know or ones right off my usual routes. Might pay a bit more occasionally, but at least I'm not stressing about accuracy or safety. Glad your accident wasn't serious though; minor fender-benders can still be such a headache to deal with.

Do you guys actually find those apps worth the trouble? I've tried a couple of them, but honestly, half the time the prices were off by enough to annoy me. One time I drove out of my way about 10 mins because the app said gas was super cheap—got there and it was basically the same price as everywhere else. Felt pretty dumb wasting gas to save gas, you know?

Also, how often do they even update these things? Is it just random people submitting prices, or do stations actually report them somehow? Seems kinda sketchy if it's just relying on random submissions, especially during busy weekends when prices bounce around a lot. Now I just stick to my regular spots, even if they're not always the cheapest—at least I know what I'm getting into.

I get where you're coming from. I've had mixed experiences myself—sometimes they're spot-on, other times it's a wild goose chase. I remember once driving my old Mustang across town because the app promised a killer deal, only to find prices had already jumped back up. Pretty frustrating, especially since my classic drinks gas like there's no tomorrow. Now I mostly stick to trusted stations—might pay a bit more, but at least no surprises...

I've noticed the same thing—those apps can be hit or miss. Prices fluctuate so quickly, and the data isn't always updated in real-time. If you're looking to avoid surprises, try checking the timestamp on the last update before heading out. Some apps show when prices were last reported, which can help gauge reliability. Personally, I cross-reference two different apps quickly before making a trip...usually saves me from unnecessary drives.

I've had mixed luck with those apps too. Last week, one showed a gas station near me at a great price, updated just an hour earlier. When I got there, it was already 15 cents higher—pretty frustrating. Now I usually glance at the update time like you mentioned, but even then it's not foolproof. Cross-checking two apps is smart; I've started doing that recently and it's definitely helped cut down on wasted trips. Still, I wish they'd find a way to get real-time updates more consistently...would save us commuters a lot of hassle.
