“there’s this ‘period 1’ thing—when you’re waiting for a ride but haven’t picked anyone up yet—and that’s like the Bermuda Triangle of coverage.”

That Bermuda Triangle analogy is spot on. I’ve read those insurance docs too and, honestly, I think they’re written in a secret code. Why is it that the second you’re just sitting there, minding your own business, suddenly nobody wants to cover you? I mean, if you’re not driving anyone yet, are you even technically “ridesharing”? Or just... existing in limbo? I tried asking my agent once and got a lot of “it depends.” Super helpful, right?

That “it depends” answer from agents cracks me up every time. I once had a client call me from the side of the road, totally panicked because she’d just been rear-ended while waiting for a ping. She was convinced her regular insurance would cover it, but nope—her personal policy basically gave her the cold shoulder. The whole “period 1” thing is like being stuck in insurance purgatory. It’s wild how you can be logged into the app, not even moving, and suddenly you’re everyone’s problem child.

Man, the “period 1” gray zone is the stuff of insurance nightmares. I’ve had people call in swearing up and down that their personal policy would save the day, then get real quiet when they realize it’s basically “nope, not our problem.” Had a guy who thought he was covered because he was just sitting in a parking lot, app on, waiting for a ride. Turns out, that’s the riskiest time to be out there. It’s like playing insurance roulette every time you log in.

That “roulette” feeling is way too real. My cousin drove for a bit and got rear-ended in that exact period 1 gray zone—app on, no passenger yet. His personal insurer bailed the second they heard “rideshare,” and the rideshare company’s coverage barely covered damages after the deductible. It’s wild how little people realize about those gaps. If you’re thinking about driving, definitely look into gap coverage or a hybrid policy. Regular insurance just doesn’t cut it once that app’s on.

That’s spot on. I’ve actually seen claims get denied just because the driver didn’t realize their personal policy excluded “commercial use.” It’s not always spelled out clearly, either. Hybrid policies aren’t perfect, but they’re way better than nothing during that weird in-between time. The deductible on the rideshare policy can be a real gut punch, though—sometimes it’s $1,000 or more.
