What happens if your rideshare app is between trips and you get into an accident?

Honestly, that’s what freaks me out about all this. One minute you’re just waiting for a ping, next thing you know you’re in a fender bender and everyone’s pointing fingers over who pays. My regular insurance guy once told me they can deny claims if they find out you were logged into a rideshare app—even if you weren’t driving anyone. Does anyone actually read those fine print details? I barely get through half the policy before zoning out... I wonder how many people are driving around thinking they're covered when they're not.

I’ve wondered about this exact thing, especially since I got hit while waiting for a ride request last year. My insurance asked if the app was on, and I wasn’t even sure what counted—just being logged in?

“they can deny claims if they find out you were logged into a rideshare app—even if you weren’t driving anyone.”
That freaks me out. Do they actually check phone records or the app itself? Feels like a trap. I tried reading the fine print but my eyes glaze over after a few paragraphs. How are we supposed to know where the lines are?

That’s exactly what worries me too—like, how are we supposed to know what's “on” in their eyes?

It really does feel like a trap. I’ve read that some companies can check your app status or even ask for phone records, but it’s not always clear when they draw the line. Why do they make it so complicated? I wish there was just one simple answer instead of all these grey areas.

It’s like, you’re just sitting there, not even moving, but technically “on the clock.” The rules feel super vague. I wish they’d just spell it out instead of making us guess.

Yeah, that’s exactly why I’m super paranoid about this stuff. I drive a pretty pricey car for rideshare, and the idea that just being logged in could mess with my insurance makes me nervous. It’s wild—like, you’re just chilling, maybe scrolling your phone, and suddenly you’re in a weird insurance gray zone. I’ve even started logging out between trips just to be safe, but honestly, who knows if that’s enough? The fine print is always a headache...
