What happens if your rideshare app is between trips and you get into an accident?

Man, this is exactly the kind of thing that’s making me nervous about signing up. I keep hearing about “Period 1” and it just sounds like a trap. Like, you’re technically working but not really? That whole

“my personal insurance flat-out denied the claim once they found out I was logged into the rideshare app”
is wild to me. I get why they do it, but it feels kinda shady.

I’ve been shopping around for insurance and half the agents I talk to don’t even seem to know what to do with rideshare stuff. One guy tried to sell me a commercial policy that cost more than my car’s worth. Not helpful. I’m guessing there’s some add-on coverage out there, but it’s like a scavenger hunt trying to find something that actually covers that in-between time.

Honestly, makes me wonder if it’s even worth it unless you’re driving full-time. The risk just seems weirdly high for what you get. Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but I’d rather be safe than stuck with a busted bumper and a massive bill...

Yeah, that “Period 1” thing tripped me up too when I first looked into it. It’s like you’re in this weird limbo where nobody wants to cover you. I totally get the paranoia—my cousin had a fender bender while waiting for a ping and his regular insurance wouldn’t touch it. What helped me was calling around and specifically asking about “rideshare gap” coverage. Not every company offers it, but a few do, and it’s usually way cheaper than a full commercial policy. Still feels like a lot of hoops for part-time work, though...

Yeah, the “Period 1” gap is wild. I called my insurer and they acted like I was speaking another language. It’s weird how you can be covered one minute, then totally exposed just because you’re waiting for a ride request. Honestly, feels like a loophole on purpose...

- Been there, got the “you’re not covered” speech from both my insurer and the app support.
- The “Period 1” thing feels like they just hope nothing happens... like if you don’t get a ping, you’re suddenly invisible to accidents?
- I once had my fender bender while just chilling, app on, no ride. Insurance lady sounded more confused than me.
- Anyone else get that vibe where you’re paying for two policies but neither wants to claim you during this window?
- Is there even an insurer out there that fills this gap, or are we all just rolling the dice between trips?

Yeah, the “Period 1” gap is a real headache. I dug into this after my friend got sideswiped while just waiting for a ping—turns out most personal policies exclude you the second the app’s on, but the rideshare coverage is super barebones until you actually accept a ride. Some companies offer “rideshare gap” add-ons, but they’re not always easy to find and can get pricey. Has anyone actually had luck with those, or do they just end up arguing with both insurers anyway?
