What happens if your rideshare app is between trips and you get into an accident?

Yeah, the “period 1” thing is such a headache. I remember when I first started driving my S-Class for rideshare, I thought my regular insurance would cover everything. Turns out, nope—my agent practically laughed. Now I keep every little detail logged, just in case someone tries to wiggle out of paying. It’s wild how fast they’ll point fingers if you’re not crystal clear about what you were doing at the exact second of an accident.

Honestly, I get why you’re logging everything, but I think people overcomplicate this “period 1” stuff.

“Now I keep every little detail logged, just in case someone tries to wiggle out of paying.”
If you’re between trips and the app’s on, rideshare insurance usually kicks in, even if it’s not as good as when you’ve got a passenger. I just make sure my app status is clear and take a screenshot if anything weird happens. No need to go full detective mode unless you’re super unlucky.

Honestly, I’m with you that some folks go overboard with the “period 1” paranoia, but I’ve seen enough stories where drivers got stuck with bills because of a technicality. Like you said,

“rideshare insurance usually kicks in, even if it’s not as good as when you’ve got a passenger.”
That’s true, but the deductible can be brutal—sometimes $1000 or more. I keep my own dashcam running just in case, and yeah, screenshots help if the app glitches. It’s not about being paranoid, just covering your bases without losing sleep over it.

Honestly, that deductible is no joke. I had a minor fender bender during period 1 last year—nothing major, but the process was way more stressful than it needed to be. My regular insurance wouldn’t touch it and the rideshare coverage left me with a $1200 bill. Ever since, I double-check my dashcam and keep a log of my shifts, just in case. Feels like overkill sometimes, but better safe than sorry...

- Totally get why you’re doing that. Those logs can be a lifesaver if anything gets disputed.
- Period 1 coverage gaps are rough—most standard policies exclude it and the rideshare company’s deductible is steep.
- Not overkill at all. I’ve seen dashcam footage make or break a claim, especially with minor incidents.
- One tip: if you ever have to file again, document EVERYTHING at the scene—photos, contact info, time stamps. The more details, the smoother things go later.
- Wish the coverage was more straightforward during those “in-between” times... but until then, your system’s smart.
