Rental liability quotes need a like-for-like comparison
Discussion options
How do you compare a rental company’s supplemental liability coverage with the liability coverage a personal auto policy may extend to a rental? I’d want to compare the limits and per-day charge, but I’m not sure what exclusions or differences would make the extra coverage worthwhile.
I’d also keep the damage waiver separate, since it addresses damage to the rental car rather than liability to others. How much do state, rental location, and the wording of the personal policy usually change the comparison?

The trigger can matter as much as the stated limit. A personal auto policy may extend liability coverage to a rental, but the policy wording determines whether it applies and what limit and conditions apply. The rental company’s supplemental liability coverage may have a separate limit and terms for how it applies. So two quotes with similar numbers aren’t necessarily equivalent: check the policy and rental coverage terms to see whether the personal policy covers that rental and whether the supplemental coverage fills a gap.
