Saw this news story yesterday about a guy in Philly who got rear-ended pretty bad, and turns out the other driver had zero insurance. Now he's stuck footing the bill for repairs and medical stuff himself. Made me wonder how common this actually is around here...and if getting extra coverage for situations like this is worth it or just another way insurance companies squeeze money outta us. Anyone had something similar happen or thoughts on this?

Honestly, it's more common than you'd think. Happened to me about two years ago—got sideswiped by someone who took off immediately. No insurance info, nothing. Luckily, I'd opted for uninsured motorist coverage a while back, and it saved me from a huge headache. Yeah, it feels like another way insurance companies nickel-and-dime us, but when you're staring down thousands in repairs and medical bills, that extra $10-15 a month suddenly seems worth it.

I get the skepticism though—insurance companies aren't exactly charities. But realistically, with so many uninsured drivers out there, especially in bigger cities, it's a gamble not to have it. I'd rather pay a bit extra each month than risk getting stuck with a massive bill because someone else decided to drive without coverage. Just my two cents...
