Would you stick with your insurer for free coffee or movie tickets?

I get where you’re coming from—those perks can be tempting when everything else lines up. I’ve been burned before, though. Switched for a “VIP rewards” program, but after a minor accident, the claims process was a nightmare. I’d rather skip the freebies if it means less stress down the road.

- Been there, done that.
- Switched for a “discounted gas card” once—ended up paying more after my rates jumped post-ticket.
- Perks are cool, but if the base price or claims process sucks, it’s not worth it.
- I’d rather save cash upfront than chase freebies.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve seen people get lured in by those “freebie” offers, only to get burned when they actually need to file a claim. That’s where the real test is. I’d take a no-nonsense insurer with fair rates and a smooth claims process over a coffee voucher any day. Those little perks don’t mean much when you’re stuck waiting weeks for your payout.

Yeah, that's the thing—perks are nice until you actually need help. I’ve seen folks get swayed by free movie tickets, but when it comes time to file a claim, the frustration just isn’t worth it. Personally, I’d rather have a straightforward policy with clear terms and a claims process that doesn’t drag on forever. The “extras” are just window dressing if the basics aren’t solid.

Free Coffee Isn’t Gonna Fix a Slow Claim

I get what you’re saying. I mean, I like a freebie as much as the next person—my kids still talk about the time we got those amusement park tickets from our old insurer. But honestly, when our minivan got rear-ended last year, all those perks felt pretty pointless. We spent three weeks chasing down updates, and the rental car coverage barely lasted long enough. At that point, I would’ve traded every “free coffee” for a straight answer and a faster payout.

I’ve noticed some companies really push the extras, but when you dig into the policy, the fine print is a mess. I’d rather have a clear policy and a claims process that doesn’t make me want to pull my hair out. Perks are nice, but they’re not what you remember when you’re stuck without your car for weeks.

That said, I do know a couple of people who swear by the rewards programs—one friend racks up enough points for a family movie night every month. Maybe if you never have to file a claim, it feels worth it? But for me, after dealing with a slow claim, I switched to a company that’s a bit more no-frills but actually answers the phone and pays out quickly. No free coffee, but I’ll take peace of mind over a latte any day.

Guess it comes down to what you value more—little perks here and there, or knowing you won’t be left hanging when something actually goes wrong. For me, it’s a pretty easy choice.
