HIGH DEDUCTIBLE: WORTH IT OR JUST STRESSFUL?

I actually went with a higher deductible last year, thinking I’d save a bunch. It does knock the monthly down, but honestly, every time I hear a weird noise or see a rock fly up on the highway, I start doing the math in my head... “Is this gonna cost me $1,000?” If you’re super careful and rarely file claims, it can work out, but for me, the peace of mind just wasn’t there. Sometimes paying a bit more each month is worth not stressing over every little thing.

I hear this a lot—people think the savings will outweigh the risk, but it really depends on your tolerance for surprise expenses. High deductibles are great until you actually need to use your insurance. If you’re losing sleep over it, probably not worth the trade-off.

HIGH DEDUCTIBLES: WORTH IT FOR THE DISCOUNT?

That’s a fair point about high deductibles being a gamble. I’ve run the numbers a few times myself, and it really does come down to how much risk you’re comfortable with. The military discount is a solid perk—those savings add up over time—but the deductible is where things get tricky.

I used to think I’d never need to file a claim, so I went for the lowest premium with the highest deductible. It looked great on paper. Then last winter, someone sideswiped my car in the parking lot. Suddenly, that “sweet deal” didn’t feel so sweet when I had to cough up $1,500 before insurance even kicked in. It stung, but it also made me rethink what I’m actually paying for: peace of mind or just saving a few bucks each month?

If you’re not losing sleep over the possibility of an unexpected bill, then you’re probably in a good spot. But if it’s making you anxious or second-guessing every drive, maybe it’s worth dialing back on the deductible—even if it means paying a bit more up front. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here.

At least with the military discount, you’ve got some breathing room to play around with coverage options. That flexibility can make all the difference if you decide to tweak your policy later on. Just don’t let the idea of saving money overshadow what you actually need from your insurance... sometimes peace of mind is worth more than the monthly savings.

It’s all about balance, really.

I totally get where you’re coming from. I used to be all about the lowest premium, too—figured I was a careful driver, what could go wrong? Then a deer jumped out in front of me on a back road. No major injuries, but the front end of my car was toast. That’s when the $1,000 deductible hit me like a ton of bricks. I remember just staring at the bill, thinking, “Was saving $20 a month really worth this headache?”

Since then, I’ve bumped my deductible down a bit. It costs me more each month, but honestly, I sleep better knowing I won’t be scrambling if something unexpected happens again. The military discount definitely helps offset that extra cost, which is a nice cushion.

It’s funny how your perspective changes after you’ve actually had to use your insurance. Saving money is great, but sometimes it’s just not worth the stress. For me, peace of mind wins out, even if it means paying a little more up front.

I get wanting peace of mind, but honestly, I’d rather keep my deductible higher and save the cash each month. I’ve driven for years and only had one claim—felt like I was just handing money to the insurance company otherwise. Guess it comes down to how much risk you’re comfortable with.
