do I really need extra insurance renting a car in Ohio?

Yeah, I used to think my personal policy had me totally covered too, until I rented a nicer SUV for a weekend trip. Turns out there was a limit on the vehicle's value, and it would've left me on the hook for anything above that. Luckily nothing happened, but it made me realize it's always worth double-checking the fine print. Rental companies love pushing their extra coverage, but sometimes there's actually a good reason behind it...

Interesting point, but I'm wondering how common that scenario really is. I've rented cars quite often—mostly standard sedans or compact SUVs—and my personal auto insurance has always covered me fully. Maybe it's different if you're renting something high-end or luxury, but for typical rentals, isn't your regular policy usually sufficient?

Also, credit card companies often provide secondary rental coverage, which could kick in to cover gaps your primary insurance leaves open. I've relied on that before without issues. Of course, you do have to check their fine print too (nothing's ever simple, right?).

I guess my question is: how frequently do people actually run into these value-limit problems? Is it mostly just a concern if you're splurging on something fancy, or should we all be more cautious even with standard rentals?
