That sounds super frustrating. I’ve heard stories like that about Progressive, but then again, my cousin had a similar headache with Geico after a fender bender in Brooklyn—lots of back and forth over parts and labor rates. Did you ever try escalating it to a supervisor, or did you just stick with the adjuster? Curious if that made any difference for you.

Honestly, I’ve heard mixed things about escalating to a supervisor—sometimes it helps, but other times you just get bounced around and end up repeating yourself. Personally, I had better luck just being super persistent with the adjuster, calling every couple of days until they got tired of me. Not sure if that’s the “right” way, but it seemed to move things along more than waiting for a supervisor to step in. Maybe it depends on who you get on the line?

That’s honestly been my experience too. I’ve seen folks escalate to supervisors and sometimes it just resets the whole process, like you’re starting over from scratch. Persistence with the adjuster can wear them down—in a good way. It’s not always the fastest, but it does keep your file from getting buried. I’ve noticed with both Geico and Progressive in NY, it really comes down to who picks up the phone that day... some reps are just more motivated than others.

Yeah, persistence is definitely key, but it can get pretty exhausting. I’ve noticed the same thing—sometimes you get someone super helpful, other times it’s like talking to a brick wall. One thing that’s helped me is keeping a call log with names and notes, just so nothing slips through the cracks. It’s not perfect, but at least I feel like I’m not losing track. Honestly, both companies can be hit or miss in NY... patience and a paper trail seem to go a long way.

I totally get what you mean about it being exhausting. I’m in the middle of my first insurance hunt and honestly, it’s kind of wild how much patience it takes. That bit you said about “sometimes you get someone super helpful, other times it’s like talking to a brick wall”—yeah, that’s been my exact experience too. I actually started keeping a notebook after one call where the rep gave me info that totally contradicted what the last person said. It’s weirdly satisfying to have a paper trail, even if it feels a little paranoid.

I’m still not sure which way I’m leaning between Geico and Progressive. Both have had their moments where I thought, “Okay, this is the one,” and then something random happens and I’m back to square one. I guess it’s just part of the process, but man, I didn’t expect it to be this much work. Anyway, your approach with the call log makes a lot of sense. Makes me feel a little less crazy for doing the same.
