Personal policy or rental damage waiver for a Nevada road trip?
Discussion options
I’m comparing coverage for renting a midsize SUV in Las Vegas and driving through Arizona, Utah, and California before returning it in Nevada.
My personal auto policy lists:
- Collision and comprehensive on my own vehicle, with a $1,000 deductible
- Liability limits of 100/300/100
- Rental-car coverage up to $50 per day for 30 days, but that appears to cover a replacement vehicle after a covered claim, not damage to a rental
- No clear wording yet on loss-of-use, administrative fees, or diminished value
The rental company’s damage waiver costs extra and seems simpler for collision damage, but I’m unsure whether it also handles liability, tires, glass, keys, or roadside charges. I may also have a credit-card rental benefit, although I need to check exclusions for SUVs, long rentals, and driving across state lines.
For this kind of multi-state trip, which option has caused fewer surprises: relying on the personal policy, buying the rental company’s waiver, or combining one of those with the card benefit? I’m especially interested in how deductibles, liability limits, exclusions, and loss-of-use charges are handled.
