Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

Yeah, I used to grumble about that extra charge too, but after seeing a buddy get stuck with a huge repair bill because the other driver had nothing, I just accept it now. It’s like paying for peace of mind, even if it’s not fun.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’m not convinced it’s always worth it for everyone. Here’s why:

- If you’ve got an older car like mine, the payout might not even cover much after the deductible.
- Some folks just can’t swing the extra cost, especially if their driving record already jacks up their rates (guilty here).
- I’ve had years where I paid for uninsured motorist and never needed it—felt like throwing money away.

Not saying it’s useless, but sometimes it feels like the system’s stacked against people who already pay more. Just my two cents.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from, but I kinda see it differently.

— true for the car, but what if you get hit and the other driver’s got nothing? Medical bills add up way faster than car repairs. I’d rather pay a little extra than risk being stuck with a fat hospital bill. Just feels like cheap insurance for worst-case stuff, even if it stings paying for it.

Yeah, I’m with you on this. I just started looking into all this insurance stuff and honestly, the medical side freaks me out way more than the car repairs. Like, if someone totals my car, sure, that sucks, but I can figure something out. But if I end up in the hospital and the other person can’t pay? That’s a nightmare. I don’t have thousands just sitting around for ER bills.

I get that the deductible thing is annoying, and sometimes it feels like you’re paying for nothing, but what’s the alternative? Hope everyone else on the road is responsible? Not really a bet I want to take. I’ve seen people get stuck with bills for stuff that wasn’t even their fault, just because the other driver had no coverage. That’s wild to me.

Honestly, I was surprised Nebraska even requires it, but now it makes sense. Why risk it? Is it really worth saving a few bucks a month if it means you could get totally screwed over by someone else’s mistake? I don’t love paying for stuff I might never use, but I’d rather be annoyed now than broke later.

Anyone else feel like the whole system is kinda backwards though? Like, why isn’t this just standard everywhere? Or why aren’t there better ways to make sure people actually have insurance? Just seems like there’s always a loophole for someone to get out of paying, and the rest of us have to cover for it. Maybe I’m missing something, but that’s how it looks from where I’m standing.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, sometimes it feels like we’re just paying to cover people who don’t follow the rules. Like you said,

“there’s always a loophole for someone to get out of paying, and the rest of us have to cover for it.”
I get why the state steps in, but it bugs me that the system lets people skate by without any real consequences. Makes me wonder if stricter enforcement would be better than just making everyone else pay more.
