Yeah, I get what you mean—at first, I thought it was just another fee, too. But when you break it down, UM actually covers stuff you’d never expect, like if the other driver bails or has zero insurance. My instructor always says to check what’s actually covered, not just assume health insurance will handle everything. It’s a pain to pay more, but honestly, it feels safer knowing I’m not totally exposed if something goes sideways.

Yeah, it’s annoying to see another line on the bill, but you’re right—UM is one of those things you don’t think about until you really need it. I’ve been driving for decades and honestly, I used to think it was just a money grab. Then a buddy of mine got rear-ended by someone with no insurance and it turned into a nightmare. His health insurance barely touched the car bills, and he was stuck fighting for months. After that, I stopped grumbling about the extra cost.

It’s not perfect, but I’d rather pay a bit more now than get stuck with a huge mess later. You’re smart to actually look at what’s covered instead of just assuming. Most people don’t bother until it’s too late.

Honestly, I get why people want that extra coverage, but I still think it’s overkill in some cases. I’ve had my share of tickets and fender benders, and yeah, dealing with insurance is a pain. But sometimes it feels like they’re just stacking fees because they can. I’d rather take my chances than pay for stuff I might never use... but maybe that’s just me being stubborn.

I get where you're coming from—insurance can feel like a money pit, especially when you’re driving something older that you’ve babied for years. I used to think the same way until a guy rear-ended my ‘72 Chevelle and turned out he had nothing. Suddenly, that “extra” coverage didn’t seem so pointless. Still, I hate how they nickel and dime you for every little thing. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just peace of mind they’re selling, not actual protection.

Honestly, I used to roll my eyes at the “extra” coverage too. My ‘68 Dart’s not worth a fortune, but it’s worth a lot to me. When some kid sideswiped it a few years back and took off, uninsured motorist was the only thing that saved me from eating the repair bill. It does feel like a racket sometimes, but after that mess, I’d rather grumble about paying than regret not having it. Still wish the rates weren’t so nuts for old cars though...
