Totally get what you mean about the insurance companies being picky. I once swapped my headlight bulbs for LEDs (just wanted to see better at night), and suddenly they were asking if I’d “altered the vehicle’s electrical system.” Like, really? As for uninsured motorist coverage, I used to think it was just another way to squeeze more money out of us, but after a buddy got rear-ended by someone with no insurance, I changed my tune real fast. The hoops are annoying, but sometimes you just gotta roll with it… or risk getting burned.

Honestly, I get why they want to know about every little change, but sometimes it feels like overkill. I’ve had to declare stuff as minor as window tint. As for uninsured motorist coverage, I still think it’s overpriced for what you get—unless you’re in a high-accident area. Guess it depends on your luck and where you drive.

I get what you mean about the window tint thing—feels like they want to know every detail, even if it doesn’t really affect anything. About uninsured motorist coverage, though, I’ve always wondered how they actually calculate the risk for that. Is it just based on accident stats in your area, or do they factor in other stuff like car type or driving history? Sometimes I feel like I’m paying for something I’ll never use, but then again, maybe that’s the point of insurance... Has anyone ever actually had to use their uninsured motorist coverage?

Title: Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

I’ve actually had to use my uninsured motorist coverage once—some guy in a rusty pickup sideswiped my BMW and just kept driving. Not exactly the “luxury” experience I signed up for. Insurance handled it, but yeah, I still wonder how they come up with those rates. Feels like they just spin a wheel sometimes...

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually think Nebraska’s requirement makes sense, especially after hearing stories like yours. The thing is, there are more uninsured drivers out there than most people realize. If you get hit and they take off or don’t have insurance, you’re stuck unless you’ve got that coverage. As for the rates, yeah, they can feel random, but they’re usually based on local accident stats, theft rates, and even repair costs for your car model. Ever notice how rates jump after a claim, even if it wasn’t your fault? That part always bugs me...
