Title: Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

I used to think maxing out uninsured/underinsured was overkill, but then my cousin got rear-ended by someone with no insurance at all. The guy just shrugged and drove off—classic. Her coverage saved her from a nightmare of bills. I get the budget concerns, but honestly, the extra cost each month is way less painful than the alternative. Still, sometimes I wonder if I’m just paying for peace of mind... but that’s worth something, right?

I hear you on the peace of mind thing—sometimes it feels like you’re just throwing money at “what ifs.” But honestly, after seeing what happens behind the scenes, I’d say you’re not overdoing it. I’ve handled claims where folks thought, “Eh, I’ll risk it,” and then some uninsured driver turns their life upside down in five seconds flat. The worst is when they find out their policy doesn’t cover nearly as much as they thought.

One time, this guy came in after a hit-and-run. He’d always kept his coverage at the bare minimum to save a few bucks. The look on his face when he realized he’d be footing most of the repair bills himself... that stuck with me. It’s not just about the car, either—medical bills can get brutal fast.

I get why people want to cut costs, but in my experience, that extra bit each month really does save you from a world of headaches. Peace of mind might sound fluffy, but when things go sideways, it’s worth every penny.

Honestly, you nailed it with this:

Peace of mind might sound fluffy, but when things go sideways, it’s worth every penny.
I’ve seen too many people regret skimping on coverage after the fact. It’s not just about the law—it’s about not gambling with your future. Nebraska’s requirement actually makes a lot of sense when you look at the numbers. You’re protecting yourself from someone else’s bad decisions, and that’s not something I’d want to leave to chance.

I get where you're coming from, but I’ve always felt like some of these requirements are a bit heavy-handed. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying go without coverage—been there, paid the price—but sometimes it feels like the state’s just piling on more costs. I know a few folks who drive older cars and barely scrape by, and every extra mandate hits them hard. There’s got to be a balance between protection and affordability, right?

- Been hit by an uninsured driver before—total nightmare.
- Rates shot up after my last ticket, so every extra dollar hurts.
- I get why the coverage is there, but man, it stings when you’re already stretched thin.
- Wish there was a way to scale it for folks with older cars or clean records...
