Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

I hear you, but honestly, I’ve started questioning if it’s worth paying for full coverage on my old pickup that sits in the driveway most months.

I get where you’re coming from, but I kinda see it the other way. My uncle had his old truck parked for months, barely used it, and then a tree branch fell on it during a storm. Insurance actually paid out way more than he’d put in for years. I know it feels like “tossing money down the drain,” but sometimes that peace of mind isn’t just a sales pitch. Guess it depends on how much risk you’re cool with.

That’s pretty much how I look at it too. Years ago, I dropped full coverage on my old sedan because it barely left the garage. Wouldn’t you know, a neighbor’s kid clipped it with his bike and smashed the side mirror. Not a huge deal, but fixing it out of pocket was more than I’d saved by dropping the coverage for that year. Stuff like that just sneaks up on you.

I get wanting to save a few bucks, especially if the truck’s not moving much. But weird things happen—hail, random accidents, whatever. For me, it’s less about the odds and more about not having to stress if something does go sideways. Guess everyone’s got their own comfort level with risk, though.

Honestly, I get it—insurance feels like paying for a “what if” that might never happen. But after my last car (RIP to the Jag’s hood ornament, thanks to a rogue shopping cart), I’m not rolling those dice again.

- Luxury cars attract trouble like magnets. Bird droppings, hail, jealous exes... you name it.
- The one time I tried to save on coverage, a tree branch decided my windshield was its final resting place.
- Sure, it stings paying for something you hope you never use, but the stress of “what if” is way worse.

Guess I’d rather grumble about premiums than cry over repair bills.

I get where you’re coming from, but I always wonder if we’re over-insuring sometimes. I drive a pretty average sedan, and while the “what if” scenarios are real, I’ve found that raising my deductible helped balance the premium pain. Not saying it’s for everyone, but for folks who don’t have luxury cars, sometimes the numbers just don’t add up.

Raising the deductible is something I’ve been mulling over too, especially since my car’s nothing fancy. I keep running the numbers and thinking, “Am I just paying for peace of mind?” I get what you mean about the “what if” scenarios, though. My cousin had a fender bender last year—nothing major, but the other driver didn’t have insurance. She was so relieved she had that uninsured motorist coverage, even though she’d grumbled about the extra cost before.

I’ve found that raising my deductible helped balance the premium pain.

That’s actually reassuring to hear. I’m still new to all this and every time I get a quote, it feels like a gamble between saving now or maybe paying way more later. The idea of over-insuring is real, especially when you’re not driving a Tesla or anything. But then again, Nebraska making uninsured motorist coverage mandatory kind of makes me wonder if there’s something I’m missing about how common those accidents are here.

I guess for me, it’s a weird balance between not wanting to throw money away and not wanting to be stuck if something goes sideways. Maybe it’s just first-timer nerves talking, but hearing stories from people who’ve actually used their coverage helps put things in perspective. Still, I’m with you—sometimes it feels like the numbers just don’t add up for regular cars. Maybe it’s one of those things where you only really appreciate it if you ever need it... which hopefully never happens.
