I hear you on the coverage—after seeing what repairs cost for my car, I’d never risk just the minimums. Even a fender bender can get expensive fast. Curious, has anyone actually had to use their uninsured motorist coverage? Wondering how smooth that process really is.

It’s honestly smoother than people expect, at least with decent carriers. Had a client rear-ended by someone with zero insurance—claim paid out pretty quick. Not painless, but way better than footing the bill yourself. Minimums just don’t cut it anymore.

One thing I’ve noticed: people assume uninsured motorist coverage is a magic fix, but it’s still insurance. There’s paperwork, adjusters, sometimes even recorded statements. And if you’re dealing with medical bills, you might have to coordinate with your health insurance too. It’s definitely better than nothing, but I wouldn’t call it painless.

Also, about minimums—totally agree they’re not enough these days. Medical costs alone can eat up those limits fast. I’ve seen folks surprised by how little their policy actually covers when something big happens. Nebraska requiring UM is smart, but I wish more people realized how much coverage they actually need, not just what’s legally required.

Curious if anyone’s had a claim denied or delayed? That seems to be where the real frustration kicks in. Sometimes it’s just a matter of getting the right documentation, but other times it feels like you’re jumping through hoops for months. Maybe I’m just jaded from seeing the tough cases, but I’d say “smooth” is a bit optimistic for everyone.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve had to use UM once after a hit-and-run, and even with a higher-end policy, the process was anything but quick. The paperwork alone took weeks, and the adjuster kept asking for extra documentation—felt like they were trying to wear me down. It’s definitely a safety net, but folks shouldn’t expect it to be hassle-free just because they’re paying extra for coverage.

I also think a lot of people underestimate how fast costs add up if you drive a pricier vehicle. Minimums barely scratch the surface when you factor in repairs and medical bills. Nebraska’s requirement is smart, but honestly, it’s just the starting line.

People think once you file a UM claim, money just appears, but it’s still got to go through all the checks and balances—sometimes more so, since there isn’t another insurer to chase down. I get why folks feel frustrated, but there’s a reason for all the documentation. Also, those state minimums? They’re really just the bare bones. Seen too many folks surprised by out-of-pocket costs after a total loss on anything newer than a decade old…
